OK, to play devil’s advocate here, how do most people really know if they are all white or all black (or Asian, Native American, etc.)? Do we all do exhaustive searches of our family trees and DNA? I know people who see themselves as all black but couldn’t say for sure that there isn’t a white person in their Civil War-era heritage. How far back in time do you want to trace your ancestry? To the point where, assuming you believe in evolution, we all came out of Africa?

I think continuing to argue about whether someone is biracial or black only delays the kind of change that someone like Barack Obama wants to see–the obliteration of racial barriers. I would guess that people who see Obama as black do so for one of two reasons: 1) they are white and either racist or uncomfortable with people of color and want to differentiate themselves from him; or 2) they are black themselves and suddenly can identify with the democratic process, whereas before they felt excluded.
