p>In the midst of a new school year that may see students not step into a physical classroom, Microsoft is bringing Minecraft: Education Edition to Chromebooks.

p>The Chrome OS version of Minecraft: Education Edition will allow cross-platform play between Windows, iPad and Mac versions of the game, which means students will have the chance to collaborate and socialize on projects regardless of the device they're playing on. Microsoft is also updating the game to add 11 new STEM lessons and an interactive Minecraft world to teach students about pollination and bees. An improved lesson plan library and learned abilities that are tagged are part of the update too.

p>According to the company, Chrome OS, iPad and Windows devices will be able to automatically install the update. Mac users will have to manually download the update. Schools that have Minecraft: Education Edition installed in their classrooms won't need to change their subscription. The company will include the Chrome OS version of Microsoft 365 Education A3 and A5 licenses.

p>Minecraft Education Edition is available since the year 2016. It's not unusual that it's only been made available to Chromebooks this year. Google's computing platform is the most popular one in education. As of the year 2019 Google reported that there were 30 million Chromebooks in use at schools around the world. In 2018, Chromebooks represented 60 percent of all laptops and tablets purchased for K-12 classrooms in the US. This release also offers Chrome OS users an official method of installing Minecraft without having to download the game onto their device.
