p>The studio behind World of Warcraft responded to a petition asking for an online server to host the original version of the game.

p>World of Warcraft is an online multiplayer game where players explore a vast landscape, complete quests and interact with other players.

p>At its peak in 2010, World of Warcraft attracted nearly 12 million users, but the game today attracts about five million paying customers.

p>The game's original release came out in 2004 and has been updated with new installments that some players claim have significantly altered the game experience.

p>Some players have set up their own servers to play the original "vanilla" WoW although the practice is technically illegal.

p>"The honest answer is, the failure to safeguard against intellectual property infringement would be detrimental to Blizzard's rights," Blizzard wrote in a forum post.

p>"There is no legal method to protect Blizzard's intellectual property, or grant an operating license to a server that is pirated."

p>The company also said it could not operate its own server for the original game "without significant difficulty", but said it was contemplating whether opening an "pristine realm" in the latest game would appease players.

p>A pristine realm would replicate certain aspects of the original WoW gameplay in the current edition.

p>"In essence, this would shut off all levelling acceleration including transfer of characters and heirloom gear, character boosts and Recruit-A Friend bonuses ..." the company wrote.

p>"We aren't sure whether this clean slate is something that would appeal to the community and is a pending topic of discussion."

p>The suggestion received a mixed response from players on WoW message boards.

p>One user said, "I would love to see a pristine server updated with current WoW in order to build a community around it without being stuck on the old version."

p>Some were more critical, however: "From my personal stance, the pristine realm isn’t at all what I want." I don't think a pure realm is able to solve the biggest issues with WoW retail.

p>Mark Kern, a game developer who worked on the original WoW said Tuesday: "WoW's an important game It's a part of gaming history but there's no legal way for players to play its older versions or even see the source of it all.
