I am about to go back on the prowl, trying some bars I have not tried before. Would you say I'd be well advised to try to start a conversation with the bartender, or whoever is handy & receptive, just to avoid being seen as the 'OMG so scary' guy who has the balls to arrive alone and maybe sit alone?

That being said, I recommend that you either get a physically attractive wingman, or go meet up with guys that you're loosely associated with that won't follow you into your sets.
