Dundee students design city waterfront with Minecraft

5 June 2015

Dundee school students have put forward their designs for the future of the city's waterfront using the game Minecraft.

Primary school students have used the game for a few months to plan for the region which is currently going through a PS1bn renewal.

The project was managed by Dundee City Council and the University of Dundee.

The appearance of the plans was considered and so was the support for tourism education and job creation.

In addition to the Minecraft Youth Camp which involves primary 6 and seven pupils from across the city, students from nine secondary schools have been taking place in similar Minecraft Youth Camp, funded by the university and TAYplan.

The students were working in groups using Playstation and XBox consoles. https://uchatoo.com/post/40577_https-minecraft-servers-fun-happy-monday-grab-your-hats-because-it-039-s-apple-n.html They worked with whiteboards in classrooms and made use of them to imagine and create their own visions of the city’s waterfront.

'Hugely enthusiastic'

Derek Robertson, Dundee University's school for education, stated that the game was a "huge phenomena" that enticed children.

He said that "We must be aware of the digital spaces children use and how they affect their learning."

"Games and applications such as these are a great way to engage children in topics like design and the environment.

"The children we have worked with over the last few months have been incredibly enthusiastic and they have produced some really great work. Some of it could be a challenge for the city planners, but that is the wonder of Minecraft it can create anything."

Mr Robertson was recently invited along with 49 other teachers from all over the globe to participate in a Minecraft Educators Summit in Los Angeles to discuss how Minecraft can be best employed in both informal and formal learning.

City firm is awarded the top prize for video games

7 November 2014

Seven amazing Minecraft creations

15 September 2014

How Dundee became an international centre for games

10 September 2014

University of Dundee

Dundee City Council
