It’s never enjoyable when you have a close encounter with an ex. No matter how long it’s been, there always seems to be a bit of uneasiness, awkwardness and the ever-present jealousy if your old partner has found someone new. This experience might not be fun but try not to dwell on the negative. Instead, turn it into something positive, or at the very least, bearable. Follow some of these tips when you have your next ex encounter.

Try to be as nonchalant as possible. Start a conversation to break the ice. Don’t jump into any serious conversations. Keep it light. Stick to something you can speak comfortably about like school or work (unless you work with your ex, which you should have known better than to get yourself into that situation!).
Regardless of the topic, hold your head high. Be confident but not overly prideful or cocky. You want to show your ex that even though you shared good and bad personal moments with one another, you’re still you. Don’t try to prove that you’re better without them or make a big show of how you’re doing now. Be attentive to their mood and body language. You should exude confidence. Show your ex that you’re happy and that you’re happy for them wherever they are in life. Life is far too short to dwell on one person, and you’ll most likely have many people that come and go before you find that special someone.
