She says that talking about why these types of rape occur is victim blaming and only serves to make the woman feel even worse about herself. But humans need causality in order to feel that the world makes sense.

We also need it to manage our own fears. If violence is completely random, if there is nothing we can do, then life is terrifying. Some of it is random, but many rapes are not. The thing is, denying this reality does a disservice to women – because in the name of avoiding victim blaming, we fail to teach young women how to be safe. My daughter is 21, and I still wait for her to safely enter a doorway whenever I drop her somewhere, even in the middle of the day. When Natalee Holloway went missing in Aruba, I discussed with my daughter all of the mistakes of judgment she had made. I have drilled into her the necessity of never separating from friends, never leaving a friend alone, never waiting for a cab alone outside, etc. Not all young women will heed these warnings, but it is very important that we keep giving them.

All three basketball players in this case were all black. Statistically speaking, they are more likely to be rape perpetrators.

If we’re being completely honest to young women here, are we also going to tell them to be especially suspicious of black guys?

I’m not being glib here. Just asking difficult questions that I don’t know the answer to.

Brilliant. Feminism relies so strongly on getting men to do things differently – how about if women have agency and do things that make sense for them?
